Attention Is a Practice, Not a Resource

Why the language of scarcity may be the wrong way to understand an attentive life.

We often speak of attention as though it were money in an account: spent, stolen, saved, or depleted. The metaphor is useful, but incomplete.

Attention is also something we practice. The quality of it changes according to where we place it, how long we stay, and whether we return after distraction.

The shape of returning

Reading a difficult page, listening without preparing a reply, or watching weather gather over a familiar street—each teaches a different form of return. None makes us permanently attentive. Each makes the next act of attention a little more available.

Perhaps the question is not only, “Where did my attention go?” but also, “What kind of attention am I rehearsing?”
